Haglund's Deformity: Do's and Don'ts

If If you have experienced Haglund's deformity in the past, you probably won't forget it. The disorder is more commonly known as a "Pump Bump." At All-In-One Foot Care Center, we want to help patients avoid the heel pain and discomfort that happens when the bone enlargement at the back of the heel becomes inflamed. Here are some suggestions to help.

Haglund's deformity can be caused by several factors:

  • Walking on the outside of the heel
  • Achilles tendon tightening
  • Those with high arches

Often, these defective foot structures are inherited. The treatment will depend on what's aggravating the bony enlargement

Do: If you suffer from Haglund's deformity, seek treatment right away. Unless the pain is treated, the irritation from the friction of footwear will only get worse and bursitis can also develop. Inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac between the tendon and bone, causes this.

Don’t: Wear shoes with a flexible back to avoid aggravating Haglund's deformity. While pumps are known for causing inflammation, men's dress shoes, ice skates, and any rigid-backed shoe can also do it.

Do: Avoid irritating your skin by choosing styles that are backless or made of soft and flexible materials.

Do: Perform stretching exercises to prevent Achilles tendon tightening.

Don’t: Do a significant amount of running uphill or on hard surfaces.

Do: If your podiatrist prescribes orthotic devices, wear them consistently. They will stabilize the foot.

Do: Make sure your shoe's heel is cushioned by using heel pads. High arches can be compensated for by heel lifts and pain can be relieved.

Do: The foot doctor may recommend icing the inflamed area and using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
