Skin Cancer on Feet

Any part of the body can develop skin cancer, including the feet. Having skin cancer on the feet is dangerous since it often goes undetected due to the location.

On the feet, there are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Malignant melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer on the feet. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type. It is important to do regular foot checks in order to detect cancer early.

Detecting skin cancer can be made easier by recognizing its signs. Cancerous moles often change color or shape. Additionally, it may appear as follows:

  • Spots or growths of pink or red color
  • An injury to the foot has regrown in an area where it wasn't before
  • Toenail with black or brown vertical line under it
  • The presence of a sore on the foot that will not heal or that will heal and return
  • Rapidly growing masses on the feet

Aside from its painful nature, skin cancer on the feet can also cause itching and bleeding that occurs intermittently.

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Cancer

A podiatrist should be consulted if you notice any changes in your foot's skin or notice any signs of skin cancer. Podiatrists examine the feet carefully to diagnose skin cancer. An evaluation of the tissue from a suspicious spot is performed in a lab to determine if it is cancerous or not. Treatment options will be discussed after a diagnosis has been made.

It is most successful to treat skin cancer on the feet when it is detected early. Excision is the most common treatment for skin cancer, in which cancer and surrounding tissue are surgically removed. In addition to immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiation, more advanced cancers may require immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Preventative Measures

Skin cancer can be detected and prevented by self-checking your feet. Whenever you check your feet, pay particular attention to any areas that have previously been injured. Do not forget to check in between your toes as well.
