Protect Your Ankles

Professional tennis players are prone to frequent ankle sprains, but at All-in-One Foot Care Center, we know that even non-athletes are at risk if they do not know how to prevent chronic ankle problems.

An examination of your ankle and imaging studies may be ordered by your foot doctor. Your foot doctor may prescribe one or more of the following treatments:

  • Rest your ankle and immobilize it for a while.
  • Medications to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation in the body
  • Retraining ligaments and strengthening supporting muscles, as well as improving balance and range of motion through physical therapy

Your ankle might feel better, but you shouldn't cut therapy short. The ligaments must be re-elasticized and the muscles around the injured area must be built.

An Ounce of Prevention

In the long run, the best way to prevent ankle sprains is to avoid them altogether. You can prevent sprains by taking the following steps:

  • When your podiatrist prescribes it, wear a brace to keep your ankle stable and prevent it from turning
  • Avoiding uneven surfaces when running
  • Wearing the right shoes for the activity you are going to do - your podiatrist can recommend shoes based on your unique foot structure.
