Hygiene-Related Foot Diseases

TEENAE Pedis (Athlete's Foot)

Numerous different fungi can cause athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis, which affects both your feet and your skin. Despite its ability to affect any part of the foot, tinea pedis most commonly affects the space between the toes. Typically, an athlete’s foot is characterized by red and itchy skin fissures and scales.

As a chronic infection that occurs frequently, tinea pedis may be treated with topical creams (applied to the skin surface) or oral medication (for example, showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools) 1. Tinea pedis can be spread by infected skin scales or fungi in damp areas (for example, showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools) 3.

Tinea pedis can be preventable or controlled by observing appropriate hygiene techniques. These methods include:

Athlete's foot can be prevented by following these tips:

  • The infection spreads through the nails, which should be kept clean and clipped short.
  • Sandals are recommended for use in locker rooms and public showers to prevent barefoot walking.

Active tinea pedis patients should follow these instructions for controlling their infection:

  • Maintain a cool, dry, and clean foot environment.
  • Swimmers should avoid public pools, showers, and foot baths.
  • Every 2-3 days, alternate your shoes by wearing sandals or airing them out.
  • Make sure you wear socks made from materials that dry quickly (such as nylon) and do not wear closed shoes.
  • Take the recommended medication to treat the infection.
