Hallux Rigidus: what is it?

The most common form of arthritis is located at the base of the big toe. It is called Hallux Rigidus. A metatarsal phalangeal joint, or MTP joint, is involved in this type of arthritis.


MTP arthritis occurs most frequently in the big toe because of its location in the big toe. Symptoms of this type of arthritis include:

  • It is difficult to bend the big toe forward.
  • The big toe continues to hurt.
  • Running and walking up hills is painful.
  • Swelling of the big toe.
