Foot Injuries Shouldn't Keep You From Your Fitness Goals

As you work toward your fitness goals, remember to keep your feet healthy. Here are a few tips from All in One Foot Care for keeping your feet safe at the gym.

Begin new workouts gradually.
Make sure you gradually increase your endurance and the duration of your workouts in order to avoid overuse injuries such as stress fractures and tendon sprains. Preventing these types of injuries is also possible by stretching before and after you exercise.

Put on the right shoe and sock.
If you are exercising or participating in a sport, wear athletic shoes that fit well. Insufficient arch support and heel cushioning in shoes can cause plantar fasciitis (heel pain). In addition, shoes that are too small may cause a neuroma, or thickening of the nerve tissue, in the foot, requiring injections, medication, or therapy. A pair of cotton socks or a non-slip pair of shoes are also essential to avoid painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more severe issues.

Technique is key.
A lack of proper exercise techniques can lead to tendons and ligaments in your foot or ankle being injured.

Don't let bacteria get you.
Getting sweaty, changing in public showers, and exercising on the pool deck at the gym lead to the growth of fungus, viruses, and bacteria, including drug-resistant strains, such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), which has become more frequent. Avoid walking barefoot in public areas. Water shoes can provide a great barrier between your feet and wet surfaces.
