Ankle Sprain: What Should You Do?

If you have foot or ankle problems, you should definitely visit your doctor or the emergency room. If you have a broken lower limb, see a doctor and have the area x-rayed at the very least to make sure the broken ends are aligned for proper healing (or insert them).

It is possible and recommended, to diagnose and treat some foot and ankle problems yourself.

The treatment of an ankle sprain should be discussed after we have mentioned that severe injuries usually require professional care. If you have been experiencing intense pain after a sprain or have tried treating it on your own without success-contact Dr. Arshia Roohian at All in One Foot Care Center. Once we have assessed the injury, we will design an effective treatment plan.

A sprained ankle can cause swelling and pain, making it difficult to bear weight on the injured foot. If you experience these symptoms after rolling your foot awkwardly, follow these steps to begin first aid:

  • It is common for physically active people, especially those who sprain their ankles, to attempt to resume their activities too quickly following an injury. After recovering from an injury, it is recommended that you rest until your body begins repairing damaged tissues. You should not return to your workout routine, sports, or other physical activity right away. Chronic ankle problems can result from this.
  • If you sprain your ankle, you should apply ice to reduce swelling and inflammation. It is important to wrap ice or ice packs before applying them to your ankle if you plan to use cold therapy on it (to avoid bruising your skin). In addition to helping prevent swelling and inflammation, ice can also relieve pain from the injury. You should only leave the wrapped ice on the affected area for a maximum of 20 minutes (per icing session).
  • A fabric bandage should be tightly wrapped around the ankle sprain to reduce swelling. Apply pressure to the affected area to reduce swelling. Avoid wrapping it too tightly, however. You need to loosen it if you experience tingling, numbness, and/or pain.
  • No matter how minor or severe your injury is, you should see a specialist as soon as possible.

A pain reliever with anti-inflammatory properties can be used if inflammation and pain are severe.
